What's going on with the VIFF...

Hey all,

I'm a bit behind the blog game as I was last year (and no doubt I'm due to fall behind once the festival starts) but I am now getting into the full festival swing as news is starting to begin for the Vancouver International Film Festival's 25th year. The festival has turned a quarter-century and has went through many progressive changes, and there is no doubt in my mind that this will be a festival for the books.

Combining the best of foreign, independent, short and mid-length, along with participation of the filmmakers and with some of the best audiences you can ever find in a film setting, the VIFF is one of the best film festivals in the world, if not THE best. (Well, that's my opinion anyway!)
Venue-wise, there is one major change this year. We will once again have the Ridge (now under Leonard Schein's Festival Cinemas chain), the Pacific Cinematheque and the new Vancity Theatre, as well as the Empire Granville 7 Cinemas, which will now have the VISA Screening Room in its enormous #7 cinema, replacing the closed-from-movies-Vogue from last year. I did not get word if the Paramount 9-plex will be joining the game, but I doubt it as they would probably want to get more first-run dibs while the Granville runs the festival.

While no films have been announced yet, the VIFF media folk will be starting to issue media releases in the coming few weeks, leading up to the media conference on September 6th. Until then, sit back and watch this blog for updates.
